The Process
Water-based stain is a type of stain which offers a multitude of colors to chose from, unlike the comparatively limited color options for acid stain. Water-based stains also leave a more solid color finish than acid stains do. However, the main difference between water-based stain and acid stain is that water-based stains do not involve a chemical reaction. Instead it is more of a top-coat coloring that has reduced opacity, penetrates and adheres to the concrete well, and is UV resistant so the color will not fade.

Maintenance
Sealers are applied after the concrete is treated with water-based stain. The sealer forms the wearing surface and protects the color. Sealer should be applied regularly, depending on whether or not the area is a high-traffic area.
